Record of donations that a European country will allocate to the Ukrainians: only the Germans have so far exceeded one billion euros in aid to the victims of the war. This is the largest amount ever given and statistically recorded in Germany in the context of a single emergency, both in nominal and inflation-adjusted terms, the German Central Institute for Social Affairs (DZI) said. The statistic cites a survey of 74 organizations related to cash donations, excluding the large volume of voluntary assistance provided and donations of materials, which cannot be quantified.
According to the DZI, around 12.9 billion euros were given to Germany in 2022 for charitable purposes.
Compared to 2021, the volume of donations increased only slightly, by 0.3%. Aid provided to Ukraine surpassed any previous fundraiser: for example, €670 million was raised for victims of the tsunami in 2004 and €350 million for victims of a major flood in Germany in 2002. Appeals for earthquake aid in Syria and Turkey in 2023 raised donations of €251 million. The earthquakes in Haiti and Pakistan in 2010, 230 and 200 million.
